UK History Tour 2019

 

Lutherstadt Wittenberg

 

Join us on our expedition to the United Kingdom, traveling from London to the Scottish Highlands. Visit abbeys, cathedrals, and castles and learn about important figures in English and Scottish history, such as Oliver Cromwell, Charles I, and John Knox. Trek across battlefields where men fought over the rights of the people versus the rights of the crown and religious tyranny. Stand where men and women were martyred for their faith and see the graves of those willing to die for Sola Scriptura. We hope you can join us on this exciting journey and see the amazing things God has done in history through the lives of ordinary men and women.

Information

Dates – August 20-31, 2019.

Prices – As usual, the price just includes costs. If it turns out to be significantly lower, we will refund the difference. On the other hand, if the currency exchange rates fluctuate greatly, we may need to increase the price.

  • Adults – $1300
  • Children 11-15 – $1150
  • Children 5-10 – $1075
  • Children 1-4 – $800
  • Young children not requiring a bus seat are free

Deposit – There is very limited space available. Deposit of $260 required by March 1 to reserve your place. Payment in full due by July 15. You can pay using the booking section later on this page. In the checkout process you will have the option to pay by credit card or to mail a check. Checks must be made payable to Dan or Kendra Horn.

Includes – All lodging, admission, and transportation during the tour. We plan to provide a light breakfast every day, 9 lunches, and dinner on several days. This price does not include airfare.

Flights – All flights are to be scheduled individually. We will gather in the morning of August 20 at our accommodation in London. There is also accommodation available August 19 for those arriving early. The tour ends in Edinburgh on August 31. To get the best prices and schedule, you may want to fly out of a major airport like Washington Dulles.

Itinerary Highlights

Tower of London

August 20-21

The tour begins in the capital of the United Kingdom, London. We will cruise along the River Thames, and see iconic sites such as the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, where the Westminster Confession was written, as well as the Banqueting House, where Charles I was executed.

 

Newark Castle

August 22

We will start traveling north, to the house where Oliver Cromwell lived. We will discuss the events of the English Civil War, and visit a castle that was besieged by Parliamentary forces during the war. This day we will consider the life of Cromwell and the controversy surrounding his religious views and political policies. Our day will end at our cottages in the beautiful countryside of Yorkshire.

 

York Minster

August 23

On this day we will visit the city of York, see the ruins of the original Roman fortifications, tour beautiful York Minster, and overlook the city from Clifford’s Tower, part of the castle built by William the Conqueror. We will discover the rich history of York, once the capital of England and home to Constantine the Great, and visited by the Vikings.

 

Gainsborough Old Hall

August 24

We will walk in the footsteps of the Pilgrims by visiting a church where William Brewster and William Bradford attended, and tour a medieval manor house owned by Puritans. Learn about the hardships they endured for their faith before fleeing to Holland, and later New England. Then we will tour Lincoln Castle, which now houses one of the four remaining original Magna Carta from 1215.

 

August 25

We will spend the Sabbath at the holiday cottages in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

 

Jedburgh Abbey

August 26

We will travel to Hadrian’s Wall, the northern border of the Roman Empire. We will continue north and hear about the conflict between the English and the Scots while visiting an Augustinian abbey, and a castle on the coast of Scotland. Our day will end at our stately retreat in Perthshire, on the edge of the Scottish Highlands.

 

St. Andrews Castle

August 27

Today we will explore the ruins of St. Andrews Castle and Cathedral, hear stories of some of the reformers, and see places where preachers were martyred for their faith. We will visit the abbey where the Declaration of Arbroath was signed, and St. John’s Kirk, where John Knox preached sermons that sparked the Reformation in Scotland.

 

Edinburgh Castle

August 28

On this day we will visit the town of Stirling, and see the site of the battle of Stirling Bridge, where the Scots defeated the British under William Wallace. We will climb up the National Wallace Monument, walk the Bannockburn Battlefield, and explore Stirling Castle, an important fortress in Scottish history.

We will drive through the highlands, visit battlefields of the Jacobite rebellions, and see picturesque Urquhart Castle, overlooking Loch Ness. Urquhart was an important location in the struggle for Scottish independence and raided many times by the MacDonalds.

On our last day of touring, we will spend the day in Edinburgh, walking the Royal Mile from Holyrood Palace to Edinburgh Castle. Along the way we will see John Knox’s house, St. Giles Cathedral and Greyfriars Kirk and hear about the important role they played in the Reformation.

 

August 31

Transfer to Edinburgh Airport.

 

Accommodation

London – We will be staying 2 nights at the Ravensbourne House outside of London, and taking the metro into London. The house is a 10 minute walk from the metro stations and restaurants. The property has a large secure garden, lounge area and access to an indoor swimming pool, sauna and game room.

 

 

 

 

 

Yorkshire – In Yorkshire, we will be spending 4 nights at the Thirkleby Hall Holiday Cottages. Each cottage has its own kitchen, sitting area, private patio and picnic bench just outside the door.

 

 

Perthshire – In the highlands of Scotland, we will be staying at the Rossie Ochil Estate for 5 nights. The property has spacious rooms, hot tubs, and game rooms.
