At Ephratha Cloister the Brothers and Sisters were required to rise at midnight for a night service in the meeting house. This may not have been unusual as you might think. There is a lot of evidence that past generations commonly had two sleeps. They would wake in the night, rise and do things, even visiting others homes, before going back to bed for a second sleep.
