When the Americans attacked the British Sherry at Germantown in 1777, some British troops barricaded themselves in Cliveden, this imposing stone house. The Americans brought up Cannon and opened fire. The first shot destroyed the front door. Others decapitated the stone statues scattered through the lawn. The marks are still visible on the facade of the house.
