Thomas Jefferson’s Mystery Bones

These bones were sent to President and naturalist Thomas Jefferson by a friend. He first believed them to be the bones of a huge cat, but it was later discovered that they were the remnants of a giant sloth – nine feet tall! The Latin name that was given to the sloth was Megalonyx Jeffersonii in honor of the third president.
